Aerogel Background

Synthetic foams can be prepared from a wide variety of metals, glasses, and polymers. These foams possess a cellular structure in which the cells are either isolated (closed-cells) or interconnected (open-cells). Organic polymer foams are common and include products such as polyurethane cushions and polystyrene cups. Aerogels are a unique class of polymer foams that can be prepared from either inorganic or organic polymers.
Aerogels typically have a nanostructure composed of extremely small interconnected particles (like pearls on a pearl necklace) with diameters of about 100 angstroms. Between these particle strings are pore spaces that are typically less than 100 nanometers in diameter.
This structure results in a solid material with nano-scale pores, low density, and open-cell porosity. It is these structural features that impart the remarkable acoustic, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of aerogels.

1/ The nanostructure is responsible for the high surface area of aerogels (350-1500 m2/g).
2/ Nano-scale pore size minimizes the scattering of visible light. Thus aerogels can be transparent, porous solids.
3/ Aerogels are lightweight, superinsulating materials.
4/ Aerogels can be composed of a variety of materials including silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), other metal oxides,
organic polymers, and carbon.

Aerogel Properties

With the lowest density, highest thermal insulation, lowest refractive index, and highest surface area per unit volume of any solid, aerogels exhibit a remarkable range of properties which are not encountered in any other kind of material.
